One of the ideas I thought could amp up the urban vitality of Cleveland Park is if more people who lived here worked here. The concept of shared work spaces is growing in cities all over the country. Here in DC there are many options, from the buttoned-downed Regus, to the far cooler WeWork – one of which occupies the old Wonder Bread factory in Shaw.
The yet-to-be built second/third story over the Connecticut Avenue commercial strip would be an ideal location for consultants, lawyers, design and engineering professionals, writers, etc. that populate Cleveland Park. That daytime traffic on the strip would draw in new retail to service new demand. A coffee shop or breakfast place perhaps?
Unfortunately, that dream could never happen under the current regulations governing Cleveland Park. I want us to review those restrictions and for everyone to understand the trade offs that were made 30 years ago in your name.
